Why we did it
One of the Alberton PS teachers, Sophie, experimented prior to the Make It Count project with teaching mathematics through design, in which the group of learners became known as the ‘Deadly Designers’. This group of predominantly middle primary Aboriginal learners displayed a real connection with learning mathematics through a design focus.
It was from this concept that our Make It Count journey emerged. We were aware that research (eg Perry and Howard, 2008 paper) suggests that Aboriginal students learn better through meaningful contexts and began investigating what this really meant for teaching and learning in mathematics.
